Hutchison and HK Telecom Shelve CDMA Network
By Biddy Chan at Bloomberg News
05-AUG-98

Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. and Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd. shelved plans to build Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) mobile phone networks in China, the Ming Pao Daily newspaper reported, citing unidentified sources.

The decision was made because the Chinese government tends to support the development of the rival GSM network which uses more sophisticated technology, the paper said.

China has yet to open its telecommunication networks for foreign participation.
