Yogi, I was reading the same article just before I read your post. A coincidence?

But isn't this just another version of a dumb terminal? (Not exactly, but along the same lines. Which means I am equating apples, oranges, and pears, because they're all fruit.)

This company is offering a net-based data storage solution. Maybe it will catch on.

But I personally like the idea of personal storage I can control (even tho I can't control my PC, or much of anything else.)

Regards,

Larry

And I sincerely doubt that laptops will die out any time soon. They may get smaller, lighter, more powerful, etc. But I doubt they are going to be replaced in the near future (to any serious degree), either in business, or in colleges, etc.

Yogi, I did the dirty job for you and posted the Visto story
on one of the IOM threads. Personally I wouldn't bet my job
on the reliability of my ISP and all the hops between ISP
and Visto. [if I still had a job <G>]

Yogi,

<<I know this story will be met with howls of derision by the "my stuff" crowd but I'm beginning to believe in "Web centric" (is that what its called) computing.>>

Not necessarily howls of derision but several objections I can think of weigh against the idea. Cheap disk drives & laptops, restrictive access (you gotta have global access which can be done in many countries but not China for example, and where it is available it is expensive), security concerns, and hardware availability at remote locations. (Ever tried to use a computer in a business center in a hotel? Even the best of them always have a wait involved to get on to one of their two machines and they are never configured well. And what are you going to do in a client's office? Kick his secy off hers? I'll pack my own thanks. After all...I was an eagle scout and learned my motto well.<GG>

Best,
Stitch
