I don't know about the economics of gold mining in Canada; however, in the U.S., the escalating premiums for megamillion dollar environmental liability insurance policies are a cost that many companies did not reckon with when they originally ran their economics. Only the largest companies can afford to self-insure and they do so at significant risk to themselves. The new 'price to mine' reality remains a significant stumbling block in comparing historical data.
