I'm guessing that the MIIIx's are part of that elusive "verbal indications of need" that Papken is always talking about. I do not think the Street will warm up to the stock until those verbal indications are converted to hard orders and the book-to-bill turns positive. Applied Materials, however, has shown some strength on cautiously optimistic comments made by Jim Morgan at the Robertson Stephens conference last week. Maybe August of 1998 will be like November of 1996, when positive comments on Applied's EPS conference call got the sector moving.
