Craig, did you buy the Dell for personal use or for your business?

Several years ago, I was asked this question and there was no tax collected for personal PC but was for business PC.

Craig, the tax issue has nothing to do with the internet. If you live in Texas, or a state where Dell has a business presence such as an office, you'll probably pay state taxes. If you live in a state where Dell does not have a presence, you should not have to pay a tax. Of course, the state will probably expect you to contact them and pay the taxes anyway.

If you have other questions, you might ask Dell. I'm sure they deal with this all the time.

PS: I'm not a CPA, so all I can offer is my understanding of the situation.

That's strange. But how much were you charged? I bought my DELL in March and I was charged only $35 tax for a $3000 computer. However I bought a cell phone battery from Motorola online, and they charged me the ~8.5% tax. (I live in California)
