Yousef, Re: "I just saw this "news" about Merced and McKinley ... Looks like
Intel will keep Xeon longer than I had suspected."

Well, another opinion that Xeon is faster out of the gate than expected, definitely a good thing. Merced delay and Xeon slow acceptance would have been disastrous. But looks like it ain't happening: from today's Briefing.Com:

Intel (INTC) Granddaddy of the industry regaining winning ways... Early signs that orders are
stronger than expected for high-end, high-margin chips... Would help bolster company's sagging
margins... Stock, which has been exhibiting improved relative strength of late, rose 2 3/16.

Yousef - Re: Merced, McKinley and Delays.

Merced is late - but what nobody is saying is that the Alpha 21264 is late and apparently is not meeting its speed objectives.

Big Deal.

As for clock speed, the Xeon/Tanner/Cascades shrink cycle will improve clock speeds - that is inevitable.

However, what these articles do not discuss is the potential Floating Point performance of the Merced. With 4 parallel FPU execution units, the Merced could put Intel into the "big leagues" for workstations where their existing x86 Integer performance is very good but the FPU performance is not up to the competition.

That FPU performance of the Merced has been left out of the advanced obituary notices.
