*DELL CUTS COSTS ON NOTEBOOKS, DESKTOPS 08/06/98 [Newsbytes,425 words]
ROUND ROCK, TEXAS, U.S.A., 1998 AUG 6 (NB) -- By Sami Menefee,
Newsbytes. Dell Computer Corp. [NASDAQ:DELL] cut prices by up to 10
percent on its Latitude notebook line and up to 17 percent from its
OptiPlex desktop PCs, the computer vendor announced Wednesday. The
two discounted lines target mobile business users and users in
networked environments.

Joe Marengi, senior vice president, Dell Relationship Group, said
the price cuts were because component costs have gone done while the
efficiency of the firm's build-to-customer-order business model has
been maintained.

The firm cited two sample configurations in the Latitude notebook
lines. A Latitude CPi M233ST notebook PC with a 12.1-inch thin-film
transistor (TFT) display, 233 megahertz (MHz) Intel Pentium processor
with MMX technology, 32 megabyte (MB) RAM, 11/20x variable speed
CD-ROM, 6.4 gigabyte (GB) hard drive was lowered 10 percent, from
$3,198 to $2,898.

The Latitude CPi M233XT, available with a 13.3-inch TFT display,
233MHz Intel Pentium processor with MMX technology, 32MB RAM, 11/20x
variable speed CD-ROM, 3.2GB hard drive, was discounted six percent.

Dell's OptiPlex desktop models were cut up to 17 percent, including
systems based on Intel's 400MHz Pentium II processor. One, the
OptiPlex GX1 with a 400MHz Intel Pentium II processor, 256MB RAM,
6.4GB hard drive, 4MB integrated video RAM, 1200LS 19-inch monitor,
14/32 variable CD-ROM, Windows 95 and a three-year next-business-day
on-site service program, was reduced 17 percent from $3,518 to
$2,915.

Another OptiPlex, the G1 model, was reduced 10 percent. The OptiPlex
G1 has a 350MHz Intel Pentium II processor, with 128MB RAM, a 6.4GB
hard drive, 2MB integrated video RAM, a Montego 64 PCI sound card,
1000HS 17-inch color monitor, a Logitech mouse, a Windows keyboard
and Windows 95.
