Singapore's Creative Chmn Sees New Card Driving Sales Growth Sound Blaster Live!, which offers 'environmental' sound that seeks to create sound as it is heard in certain environments, is targeted at video game enthusiasts and musicians. The estimated retail price for the product is US$199.99. Sim said although the product is designed for the company's retail market, most of which is in the U.S., Creative hopes the product will soon be adopted by original equipment manufacturers. 'After satisfying all the needs of retail customers, the top OEM's will adopt it,' he said, adding that OEM's could adopt the product 'very soon.' Sim said the company is also considering bringing the product outside of the personal computer audio industry. 'We can strip away the PC baggage, make it lower cost, and it could be embedded in stereos, TV's,' he said. The company said it wouldn't be deterred by the Asian financial crisis and expected the sophisticated audio card to appeal to a niche market of video game enthusiasts in the region. 'The niche market always goes high end,' Low Chee Seng, Vice President for Asia Pacific Group, said. 'We are not waiting for economic conditions (to improve).' Market players have been awaiting the launch of the product, saying that its success could turn around the company's prospects, which in the past year have been bleak due to a difficult retail market in the U.S. Pricing pressures of its low-end and mid-range video graphic cards crunched profits, with market expectations that fourth-quarter net profit will plunge by as much as 60%. -By Anita Jain; 65 -421 -4807; anita.jain@cor.dowjones.com (END) DOW JONES NEWS 08 -06 -98 05:11 AM
