re:I always felt Intel's decision to delay Merced was a strategic move, rather than one resulting from technical difficulties. The picture becomes clearer everyday.

Exactly. Intel pushing Merced in mid-late 1999 would probably mean a a cancellation of 32-bit processor orders until 64-bit Merced was ready. Very uncertain revenue stream as a result. Now, the choice is clear: XEON and all its variants for the next 2 years. Much more certain revenue stream, and from the looks of initial orders, very profitable revenue stream.

Ibexx,

Re: "I always felt Intel's decision to delay Merced was a strategic move, rather
than one resulting from technical difficulties."

I respectfully disagree ... Technical reason on the design side have
forced this delay. The sooner that Intel can get out Merced/McKinley, the
sooner that HP, IBM, SGI, Compaq, ... will stop pursuing their own
RISC processors. Intel needs to move into the "high-end" Enterprise
Server market ... I'm not convinced that Xeon will do that for Intel.

BTW, the way I read the earlier "link" that I posted regarding Merced ... indicates
that Merced might never come out. This is much different than a six
month delay.

I always felt Intel's decision to delay Merced was a strategic move, rather than one resulting from technical difficulties.

No way, Intel doesn't work like that. The delay means that the first IA64 implementation is probably not going to be a performance leader. This is a big disappointment.
