BSkyB and Open TV........................................newsalert.com OpenTV and BSkyB Team Up for First Interactive TV Launch in U.K. Business Wire - August 06, 1998 16:01 MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 6, 1998--OpenTV(R), Inc., the leading provider of operating systems for digital interactive television, and British Sky Broadcasting Group plc, the U.K.-based pay-television organization, today announced that Sky's Digital Satellite service will be launched to new customers on Oct. 1, using OpenTV's software in all set top boxes deployed in the United Kingdom for the delivery of interactive television services. Sky will be the first company to introduce digital television services to viewers in the U.K. Through its investment in British Interactive Broadcasting (whose other shareholders are British Telecom, HSBC and Matsushita Electric), it will also be the first to offer U.K. homes a comprehensive array of interactive services using OpenTV's software. Mark Booth, chief executive of Sky, said: "On October 1, Sky will launch the best television service in the U.K. We are leading the digital television revolution and will gain greatly from being the first to launch." OpenTV is working with numerous other consumer electronics manufacturers and large cable and satellite TV operators around the world. Its operating system has already been delivered in digital set-tops in over one million homes. Although the company's initial focus has been on the exploding European marketplace, OpenTV will announce plans shortly for an aggressive North American deployment of its interactive software.
