Jason -
EPIC has some potential benefits, but it is so dependent on advanced compilers and skillful coders that it could misfire for a while until the advanced developers get the picture. Explicit parallelism has been around in theory for a long time, and the software problems have kept it from catching on.

Alpha has the standard RISC benefit - it has a relatively simple instruction set and therefore can do a lot of parallel execution and prediction without hints from the compiler. Alpha has the additional benefit that most of the optimization is in hardware, so a new generation benefits old and new apps alike, with no recompile.
