U.S. TRADING SUMMARY: U.S. stocks were modestly higher at midday
in volatile trading with technology stocks posting solid gains as
investors made safe bets, trying to divine whether the market's
correction was over. "There's a bunker mentality. People are
breaking into camps of whether it's a correction or worse, a bear
market," said Charles Payne, head analyst at independent market
research firm Wall Street Strategies. "Only a few brave souls are
buying." The Dow was up 11 at 8558 in choppy, hesitant trading, as
investors try to gauge if the week's correction is complete. The
Nasdaq showed fewer doubts with techs pushing index up 27 points
to 1815. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was a hair higher, with a
gain of five points to 1087, but breadth at the New York Stock
Exchange was slightly negative on heavy midday volume of 374.4
million.
