A mine in South Africa operated in a difficult mountainous area at
12 Carats per hundred tons.

The average caratage for a South African mine is 23 Carats per hundred tons. Much of that is underground mined.

The South Africans used to do 10,000 ton bulk samples just to determine if they would mine a level underground.

Diamond mining is the most profitable business in the world.
