RESEARCH ALERT - Goldman names Compaq as priority

NEW YORK, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs & Co. named Compaq Computer Corp. to its global priority list, citing the company's strong underlying fundamentals, the office of Goldman personal computer analyst Rick Schutte said late on Thursday.

Compaq already is on the analyst's recommended list. No further details were immediately available.

Compaq stock rose as high as $36 in after-hours trading but later settled back to $34-3/4. During the regular trading session on Thursday, the stock closed at $33-15/16, up $2 on the day.
