The pressure to get people to buy the pre-configured computers via compaq and others is mostly limited (IMO) to those buyers who are fairly new to the computer world and are not sure what to ask for if they had a choice.

About a year ago I decided it was time for a new PC. I've been using PC's since grade school & started with a TRS-80 model I (now in the Smithsonian). Anyway, I knew what I wanted & more importantly I knew what I didn't need. I priced Compaq, Dell, and several others. I ended up buying at a computer show. I went around the show site buying parts & building the system. When all was said & done I probably saved about $800 off of what Dell or Compaq would have charged. However, I have no tech support & I knew what I was doing. Most people out there buying their first family computer don't. They can be sold all the extra stuff that they don't need and they want the security of having someone to scream at when something goes wrong. These are the aspects that box makers need to focus in on. I'm happy as a consumer to see Dell pass along saving to the customer, but as a share holder I think I'd rather see them boost the margins.

Well here is some kind words for Compaq from Goldman Sachs.

Sig:

One of the reasons why money is chasing PC companies other than Dell (like CPQ and GTW) could be this (see below), but still they are having a hard time keeping the winner down,it could be flavor of the day kinda thing and I suspect THEY WILL BEEE BAAAAACK and they will pay a higher price for their foolish behavior make no mistake. You do agree with me don't you Sig????? Listen I won't hold it against you if you disagree though.<vbg>

I remember Lucy Painter of M.Lynch was touting CPQ too last year and it did help the stock for a while only to blow up on her pretty little face eventually and that is the last anybody heard from her, wonder what she is up to these days.<g>

Here is the news, I almost forgot.
