Jon, your response to marginmike re: satellite handsets is generally correct, i.e., a satellite phone is bigger than a terrestial cell phone. But I think you should know that there is "ugly" and then there is "fugly".
A sat. phone for the G* system may be a little "ugly" vis a vis the current breed of way cool cell phones. It's really not that bad though; check it out on G*s web site. [forget URL; neat picture was there a few weeks back though].
Now if you want "fugly"--dig an Iridium phone from BatWing. For a mere $3K, you too can have the privilege of hoisting a small sized suitcase into the ready position and then yapping away at $3-$7 per minute depending.
Oh yeah, Iridium is GSM; Globalstar is CDMA. Wonder if that's a factor in the size/beauty contest? heh, heh, heh. Surfer Mike
