Fleck on Gateway's run today:

Gateway rally golf inspired?...The power performance was the
semiconductor and Gateway. The stock was up as much as $7 today, and
now has rallied from $50 to $60 in the last two days. The reason being that Goldman analyst Rick Shutte apparently played golf with management, and they stated that July is strong like June was.

Now remember that Gateway just missed its numbers the other day by a huge amount and didn't bother to pre-announce. The company basically took the liberty of fibbing to folks last quarter, now says how the first eight days of July are great, and the Goldman analyst runs the stock up 20 percent.

Just to put that fact in perspective, I would like to point out that Circuit City came out today and said that its PC sales for the month of July were down eight percent after being up six percent in June, with Windows 98 in both. So once again the good folks at Gateway are taking the liberty of finessing things. Wall Street is cooperating by playing the part of eager beaver and latching on.

Nobody ever said that the street is rational, except over the very long term, and short term rationality depends entirely on the eye of the beholder. Love is blind, but so is hate. You may be right, but then again you may be wrong. How's that for obfuscation? Let the games go on.
