If you had predicted half of the BS that has occurred, I'd have asked what you had been smoking and would have known you had definitely inhaled !!
I agree the Wal-Mart announcement really was a watershed point for GT. These guys were originally videotape distributors, so they viewed PC games as a similar commodity to distribute. Allow me to reiterate, I said they were videotape distributors, not Hollywood or even Hong Kong moviemakers. Their publishing business was something that grew out of the WizardWorks & FormGen acquisitions. The suits made a lot of cash on Duke and figured this business can't be that hard. After all we're just selling games to kids. Wrong !! PC Gamers are a finicky and fractious lot and they're not just kids. What was hot last year isn't acceptable this year. The suits don't play PC games so they're clueless with regard to what will sell, they're not idea men either, and consequently they just kept repackaging the same product. The company should have been named FPS Interactive. Look at the line-up Unreal, Blood2, Duke4, & Prey. This story could go on about how their internally developed titles are only clones. The mantra of the suits: nothing fresh and nothing new, just give 'em old tried and true. If GT is smart they'll reevaluate their business plan, restructure and go to strictly Console (i.e. Mario type games) via SingleTrac, and Children's software via Humongous. I'd continue expanding the Value line (Wizard & MacWorks)and work on maintaining their distribution channels. Then start buying back shares !! Lets face it coming up with ideas appealing to customers that are smarter than 8 & 10 year olds is way beyond their scope.
GT could never use the motto : By Gamers. For Gamers.
Cheers
Bill
