Sure this will solve some of AOL's problems with exchange points. It won't solve the problem with last mile bottlenecks. If you have a 33.6k modem and you are downloading anything with graphics the bottleneck is still there, and you still sit staring at the little dealie telling you how many seconds left.

When you boil away the marketing hype, AOL has just announced that they have discovered peering with webhosting companies. No big deal.
They ain't got the whole package and unless you have the whole package, ie. peering with content providers, peering with other ISP's, a front end to sell stuff over (ala AOL), a backbone you own and control, caching technology deployed at the neighborhood, AND the pipes to get the data from there to the home, you end up like AOL, an 800lb gorilla in a soon to be shrinking forest.

I don't think that will help much. It's still the enduser dialing up via modem. Reducing the hops may help a little but they'll still be way slower than cable. I'm sure Ahhaha and Hiram will give the technical details shortly. ;-)

I have to agree that AOL is screwed. As more features hit the 'net even basic web pages will be a pain to download via conventional methods. I always thought AOL's crapppy content would be their downfall, now it looks to be bandwidth.

Damn, gotta act quick around here. I think yesterday was my golden opportunity to get in.

Regards,
Stuart

That doesn't even address the problem. Such a move on AOL's part indicates fear. There are better ways to go about solving the problem, but you have to remember their CEO. Case is treacherous and self-deluded. He has been been built up by the unbelievable and endless gullibility of the public. As quickly as they have joined the ranks, they will abandon the service. Of course, that assumes there is a competitive reason to do so. Where is it? Coming, and coming, and coming...He believes AOL is invincible. Pride goeth before destruction and haughtiness before a fall.

Franz, one of the biggest bottlenecks is the "final mile" into the home. This doesn't solve that problem. Cable still superior to phone for the forseeable future for the final mile.
