Funny info about Merced and the reason for it's delay:
Whats inside MERCED? - browser stuff!!!
x6.dejanews.com

"The first Merced processors will ship with an application
instruction kernel for Mendax, a multimedia Web browser
being developed jointly between Intel and Hewlett-Packard.
Recent announcements of delays in the release of Merced
are due to unanticipated hangups in the software development
program.

Note that the design is completely compatible with running
third-party web browsers such as Netscape's Navigator and
Microsoft's Internet Explorer. It is entirely an extra
functionality that the user can choose to use or not use.
However, the full performance of the Merced processor will
only be available when executing from the application ROM
space."

Note, the article was presumably written by an Intel engineer...
Look also into the follow-ups, where computer architects
are mocking about the decision to stuff the "aplication
kernel" with browser junk instead of important OS kernel
functions. How pathetic!!!
