You should have invested that $1650 in Dell stock.

Eddie, what's your point?

Are you suggesting that there is no way Dell can offer
a machine with a similar feature set at a comparable price?
Maybe the practice of using middlemen and holding excess
inventory allows Compaq to build a superior product with a
much lower cost structure?

Spend some time and re-analyze the Dell vs. Compaq operating
model, associated cost structures, target customers and growth
opportunities.

Dell has not achieved 50% yr/yr growth by catering to the
whims of the Eddie Kims of the world.

The gap between business hardware/relationship requirements
and the singular retail loyalty free once-every-four-years
consumer box replacement cycle is still very wide in many, many subtle ways that the average Joe just can't comprehend, today,
tomorrow or ever.

Compaq will sell zillions of computers yet their profits will
be continually compromised and their stock will be a lousy
investment for a long, long, long, long time.

Be smart. Understand why Compaq and Dell don't play in all
the same spaces.... and buy Dell stock if you'd like some
profits to pay for that Compaq PC many times over.

<<My Compaq Presario PII 300MHX machine
- 64 Megs of RAM
- 8.0 GB UltraDMA Hard Drive
- 32x Max CD-ROM
- 56K V.90 modem
- Iomega Zip Drive
- 2x AGP Graphics
- ATI 3D Rage LT Pro
- 17" monitor with JBL Pro Speaker and Telex Microphone
- Aureal A3D Interactive 360 Sound
- 2 USB ports and a MIDI/game port in the front
- DFP Port
- tons of software

Cost me $1,650 before tax. Find me a Dell machine that is noticably
cheaper, and like the average consumer I couldn't give a rat's ass if a
Dell machine has a 8.4 GB hard drive (compared to the 8.0 that I got
that I'll never fill) or the like.>.

What does this have to do with my post to you? My point was that you can not buy "on-line" from Compaq (or direct, for that matter)... that's all....I know they make a good machine at a good price..No doubts there...

P.S. In case you haven't noticed, the "average" consumer really isn't Dell's target market....not even on the consumer side.

Here is my answer to your post, Dell doesn't make cheap PCs period, that is why we have Compaq, right???? So if you want cheap stick with CPQ if you want quality and service buy a Dell.

If 'cheap' is your main criteria I hear Walmart has the system for you.
