Frontier will use ATM switches from Ascend in the ATM layer of its nationwide "Optronics" fiber-optic network. Frontier
plans to deploy more than 40 of the switches by the first quarter of
next year. Ascend will supply its new GX 550 "Smart Core" ATM
switch as well as its CBX 500 ATM switch. The GX 550 is the
cornerstone of Ascend's optical internetworking strategy, and the
company revealed that Frontier was conducting trials of the unit
when it unveiled the GX 550 during June's SUPERCOMM show.
Frontier has conducted interoperability tests between the GX 550
and NEC America's SpectralWave DWDM equipment to enable
the Ascend switch to interface directly into the optical layer.
Frontier will use both the SpectralWave equipment and NEC
America's ITS-2400V technology to provide its network with
four-fiber bidirectional line switched ring capability. The company
also announced plans to add an OC-48c IP segment to the
Optronics network by the fourth quarter of this year.
