James,

Not "environmental consciousness" as we know it, more territorial consciousness. Each cluster of villages has its own territory, bequeathed by the ancestors, and absolutely nobody except the tribe is allowed to use it. Since the central government claims ownership of minerals, rivers, etc., there has occasionally been conflict, with the government generally getting its ass kicked. Tough people.

Women are not equal, but definitely not property. Formal decision-making is reserved to male elders, but women who have earned respect have significant input. I rented a house (5 bedrooms, with fireplace, $20/month) from the widow of a very highly respected leader, and there were often little conferences with some of the old men going on out by her pigpen (she still lived in a traditional hut). It was pretty clear that her advice was being asked. And if she got ticked off and snapped about something, people would jump, fast. No woman would be forced, certainly, to marry somebody she didn't want to - pressured, maybe, but not forced. Labor is shared. Women probably worked more hours in a day, but the men usually do the more strenuous work (the work the women do would leave any of us in a basket). Some interesting divisions - men too old to do physical work are usually seen holding babies or looking after toddlers.

In general I'd say that respect and influence were given people as they earned it. Nothing to do with education - neither my former landlady nor her late husband could read or write. But they were by no means stupid, and it showed.
