I'm an ATHM user (and stockholder). Today I signed up for a promotional 100 free hours on AOL. During the setup process, I instructed AOL that I already had a TCP/IP LAN connection (via ATHM).

AOL calls it BYOA (Bring Your Own Access). With BYOA, the montly unlimited AOL access cost is $9.95. Of course my first month is free due to the promotion.

At the end of the day, the monthly cost for someone that is a "dyed in the wool AOL user" AND wants the ATHM speed will spend $39.95 (@Home monthly fee) plus $9.95 (AOL monthly fee) = $49.90/month plus some taxes.

The question I have to ask myself is: "Is AOL content -OR- the ability to have a total of eight eMail accounts (5 @ AOL plus 3 @ ATHM) worth the extra ten bucks a month ? My initial reaction is NO !. If I had a huge family or a need for alot of eMail accounts I might think differently.

For your amusement, I have TCI@Home in the Pleasanton, CA area. TCI recently re-mapped their cable TV channels in my area. Did they bother to tell anybody ???? ...... Noooooooooooooooo. Apparently not even their ATHM comrades. So.. for about 36 hours I was unable to access ATHM via the cable system. It would seem that ATHM is sent over one of the cable TV channels (frequencies). If so, this really qualifies for the stupid award.

Other than that, I'm sold and singing the praises on cable-based internet access and ATHM. My wife keeps telling me I should have bought more ATHM. (She's probabaly right... but I won't give her the satisfaction !)
