Fridays are usually down days because traders dont want to hold stocks over the weekend in case of some unforseen event (ala a plane crash or some other disaster).
July- September (3rd quarter- reported in October) are the weakest months while 4th quarter has historically been good (results reported in January). Summer months have also been good while there's usually a lull in February or March.
