If it's true that they conducted joint live-fire exercises in a disputed area without the knowledge of the president or Sec. of Defense, I'd have to say they handed that issue over on a silver platter. Kind of hard to argue against it.

I agree on the strategic potential of SE Mindanao, but the best security move they can make in the area will be the promotion of real economic development. To do that, they're going to have to get around the existing political structure, which is still dominated by a few families, many of them holdovers from the Marcos era. Their grotesque inefficiency in economic matters and their ruthless efficiency in political matters make them quite a difficult obstacle to get around.

PS Are you in the area?

Tom,

My opinion about the devaluation of the yuan is changing. Considering everything that has happened in the last couple of weeks, for them to stay tied to the $US (that's effectively what they are trying to do) when all other governments, businesses, and currencies around them collapsing now seems impossible and even unreasonable. They now have too many internal problems and a strong export economy is going to be essential.

FWIW,
Ron
