Z;

<<Can there really be shortages of 3 to 4 GB drives? As in allocation? >>

You ask the 64K question. That statement caught me completely off guard and I am planning on staying up late tonight and make some calls back to the states. It is incredible really. I know the inventories have been declining and TBowl brought to my attention that pricing he was tracking had recently firmed up. But it all seems rather sudden to me. I have some anecdotal stuff that orders are coming in but nothing like "allocation". That word hasn't come up in a very long time indeed.

best,
Stitch

If there is any shortage or declining inventories it is because 3.2-4.3g drives are being phased out. They can't have the same margin on them as the 6.4's & up (which will be the heart by Xmas). If there was truly a shortage of 3.2's and 4.3's then there would not be 6 and 7 pages of them for sale at www.pricewatch.com.
The second clue should be, that you can buy new at pricewatch.com for what I see the used 3.2 & 4.3's at ONSL and eBay.
This is hype for a final pump and dump so some big institutional holders can get out what they have in this whole sector, IMHO. Maxtor and IBM are punishing the high-end, and Fujitsu, Samsung, and now even SEG are dumping on the low-end. Go and look at the prices and what the resellers are doing and this should be blatantly obvious.

If KMAG and HMTT start ramping up production, then I'll believe there is a shortage.

Respectfully
Scott
