07:35 DJS July Payrolls Rose 66,000; Jobless Rate Held Steady At 4.5%

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Payrolls rose by a modest 66,000 in July, the
Labor Department reported Friday, while the jobless rate remained steady at
4.5% despite the impact of the General Motors strike.
The figures were generally in line with expectations. The median
forecast of 21 economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires and CNBC was for a
50,000 increase in July payrolls, down sharply from the 205,000 gain posted in
June. Unemployment was seen holding steady at 4.5%.
Payrolls are at their lowest level since January 1996, while
manufacturing payrolls haven't been this low since 1982, Labor said.
The department said the GM strike reduced payrolls by 140,000.
At its peak, the strike left some 185,000 people out of work, including
employees at Canadian and Mexican plants. As a result, the number of domestic
employees affected by the strike was actually closer to 135,000.

Eddie, my point is to give you a hard time for
generally siding with Compaq in all of your
Compaq vs. Dell posts. You always come back
and say geeez! you guys always want to turn
this into a cpq vs. dell thing
as if it
was never your intent to make comparisons.

Well, in my opinion, it IS about CPQ vs. Dell. Business
is war, conquer and devour. So far, Dell is winning
and CPQ is whining. I for one would love to see Dell take
all of Compaq's market share over the next few years...
kicking them out of the PC business all together,
wouldn't you? <ggg>

It's still not too late to trade in that Presario
for 16 shares of Dell.
