Lucent CEO Sees Industry Changes Fostering Further Growth

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The wave of big mergers in the telecommunications industry plus the addition of a number of smaller players signals continued strength for Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU), according to Chief Executive Richard McGinn.

Those companies "still need and demand high quality and high performance communications and that's what we're about," he said in an interview Firday on CNBC.

A combination of organic growth and possible acquisitions will also keep the company on its path of sharp growth, McGinn said, noting that Lucent has seen 20% top-line growth.

That performance is what has helped Lucent's stock price climb so high, he said.

"What people are seeing is performance that is strong and is sustained," McGinn said.

And while speculation abounds that Lucent will make a big acquisition this fall when its accounting rules permit a pooling of interests deal, McGinn said that the company won't make deals based on accounting rules. While it might be more attractive to do a big deal as a pooling of interest, he said Lucent would have made a big deal if the circumstances were right even without the accounting freedom.

BEST WISHES
BILL
