The term "marketable securities" does not necessarily mean "marketable equity securities" - it more likely means short term bonds, CD's, money market funds. Investments must be convertible to cash within 12 months usually to be classified here.

A company can buy equities, but then cannot increase the value on their balance sheet because of price appreciation unless they sell the equity (i.e. they must use lower of cost or market for valuation).

As for smart investing, Gateway reported interest income of about $10 million for the quarter on about $900 of cash and securities. The works out to be a 1.1% return for the quarter, or about 4.5% annually.

Definitely money market type returns, but I guess it is better than Skeeter is doing at the present time.
