From IDC Deployment of Server Operating Environments Shifting Toward Volume and Value Classifications The twin trends of "volume" deployment of Microsoft NT Server and Novell NetWare for departmental use and "value" deployment of Unix onto larger hardware for centralized management are defining the server operating environment (SOE) marketplace. "We expect business units to continue to deploy multiple application servers within departments, while large corporations will step up installation of centrally managed servers for online transaction processing, database applications and Web-serving." said Jean Bozman, research manager, Server Operating Environments. "As volume sales of low-end SOEs drive down prices, sales of midrange SOEs, with higher pricetags, bring more functional server software modules to users and guarantees of specified uptime levels." The Server Operating Environments: 1998 Worldwide Markets and Trends report analyzes the current and upcoming competitive corporate environments for SOEs, including Unix operating systems, Microsoft's NT, Novell's NetWare, and IBM OS/2. For the first time, summary data on total Linux worldwide shipments and worldwide host/server software total license shipments for IBM OS/400 and mainframe and Digital OpenVMS are also provided. Importantly, the report includes a five-year forecast for all major SOE platforms. SOE Key Findings Mixed-vendor environments for SOEs will persist into the next century in large enterprises because of the wide variety of tasks in these organizations. Microsoft NT Server's installed base is expected to surpass Unix in 1999 and Novell NetWare in the year 2000. NT Server had the fastest growth of new worldwide software license shipments in 1997 with a 73 percent increase, compared to Unix, which grew at 17 percent. More than half the NT Server new license shipments in 1997 were for file/print server use, while only 10 percent of new Unix Server licenses were used for this function. More than 90% of DNS, E-mail and other Internet backbone servers were UNIX based. UNIX continued to be the OS of choice for ERP and other core applications. Novell NetWare shipments, declined nearly seven percent in 1997; while IBM OS/2 declined 36 percent. The Server Operating Environments: 1998 Worldwide Markets and Trends report provides an overview of the trends, issues, and overall dynamics of the SOE market and includes the projected shipment growth and installed base over the next five years.
