Dow peels back from highs, hit by sell program-Damn sell program, sheesh!May be it is Eddie?

Friday August 7, 1:59 pm Eastern Time

NEW YORK, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Wall Street stocks backtracked sharply in early afternoon as a sell program erased much of the market's early gains.

According to Birinyi Associates, a sell program finished working its way through the market at about 1345 EDT/1745 GMT.

The firm had not completed calculating the effect of the selling but did describe the program as a ''brief'' one compared to some of the recent, massive program trades that have buffeted the market.

The Dow was up 40 points at 8618 after nearly falling to 8600 at the depths of the afternoon selling.

The Nasdaq Composite continued to outperform the blue chip average, holding at 1846, up 17 points or nearly one percent.

U.S. Treasuries firmed in early afternoon, lifted by a strong U.S. dollar. The benchmark 30-year bond was up 18/32 to yield 5.63 percent. The dollar was steady after extending to above 146 yen in afternoon activity.
