Quite true, and I meant to note that in my original post. He doesn't cite any sources, so who knows how old the info is.

For all we know, Apple is on target for delivery of 50,000 units
next Friday, but Cringley got wind that the first 5000 production
units off the line had an 11% failure rate during a QC check. That
actually doesn't sound unusual upon starting up a line.


Also true, but he does mention the same as you do; the problems will likely be fixed, and the failure rate is to be expected at the beginning of the line.

What we really don't need is a PowerBook 5300-type engineering fiasco with massive consumer backlash and negative press. Hopefully, Jobs and company have things well in hand and will fix any production line problems right away. Jobs knows better than anyone that Apple can't afford to blow this intro.
