Man gets jail for e-mail threats

SANTA ANA, Calif. - Richard Machado, the first person to be convicted of civil rights violations by sending death threats via e-mail, was sentenced Monday to the maximum one year in prison.

(cut)

''Making racially motivated death threats -- whether over the phone, via the mails, or on the Internet -- is a federal offense that can bring stiff penalties,'' said U.S. Attorney Nora M. Manella.

By The Associated Press

This was a case in which the death threats were racially motivated, but the jail sentence was about the death threat, not the racial aspect.
