Rambling reply--- A-sexual co-inhabitants??????? Good grief, no. Did I say that???? I am a strong proponent of sex!!!! It's a GOOD thing!!!! Up with sex!!! And I don't think they are separate at all--mind and body. But it seems that a little more importance is placed on bodily attributes than mental when men think of mating. I think it was Freddy who wrote that women are attracted to money and power, rather than a pretty face. Can't help themselves. It's all about survival. For men, I guess it's about continuance--survival in a different way and so they are attracted to the physical attributes they equate with that. (Which doesn't explain the appeal of the anorexic Kate Mosses for men--now THAT's scary) But then I'm at an age when I see men trading in their wives for the trophies, and it's a pet peeve of mine, because there isn't a great demand for the intelligent older woman-- (Which of course is what I am, although I'm not in the market, thank God). Often she's a pathetic joke in movies and on TV. I deeply resent that characterization. But all this arose because Bill questioned the creation of the Women of SI thread. And made valid points about it. And I mentioned that I had encountered sexism on SI- (John Galt was the worst!) and liked the comfort of talking to a bunch of women in a gentler atmosphere. Kinda like here. Where of course, all the men are enlightened and egalitarian. Respect springs from both aspects---sure-- I'll buy that. But too often as we get older, it's harder to get past the physical to the rest- at least in terms of a relationship, where you can have both. I think it was women who tried too hard to change their own nature in the 70s and 80s.But then, I love the differences between men and women---as long as the respect is mutual.
