1) I believe YURI simply glues and unglues OCxx pipes together...FORE
actually provides different sized bandwith connections over OC3,
OC12 and OC48. In protocol terms....YURI is missing the "c" in
OC48c.

2) Because of 1, no. I can see vendors using YURI to aggregate FORE's
OC48 support into OC192 connections and the like. So YURI is
complimentary to FOREs.

3) Yes.

4) Use ATM and possibly GigE in the backbone (if the cost is justified
but primarily ATM. Avoid ATM to the desktop...use GigE for low
cost high speed connections that quality of service doesn't
matter (too much) and use high speed ATM to the servers.
One size does not fit all!

5) Ignore IP and ATM.....place IP onto of ATM. ATM provides a higher
level of communication flexibility and guarentees. If you don't
need that level in part of the network then you don't use.

Alas you make a link based on short term costs and discover that
later the business grows unexpectantly and now your link is
suffering....so you might as well put in ATM to begin with....

Phone calls are ATM....there is a mind set problem which is going
to take a long time plus people don't talk about ATM in terms of
"billing" for calls....there is intermixing there....but it is
difficult at the moment.

6) Don't know or possibly understand.

7) Segmenting the product lines for WAN vs LAN is short sighted. The
LAN is moving to the WAN and vice versa....the question is where
does the enterprise LAN end and the carrier WAN begin...and who is
the carrier...AT&T or a new fast moving company.

8) Don't know.

1) Aren't YURI's products complimentary to FORE's?
some of them do, some don't

2) Isn't fore unsuccessfully trying to devlop a product that is similar to yuri's?
unsuccessfully probably is not proper way to put this; more like for time-to-market opportunity

3) If atm dominates the wan with ip networks being the norm, does that mean that atm could very well become the backbone choice of lan's, even if gigabit goes to the desktops?

latest and greatest from engs doesn't mean a thing unless it brings - cost savings, productivity gains and opens new mkts opp; atm, gig or tera as long as these are met-

4) Or in other words if we have voice, data, etc over the lan do you put atm in the backbone then gigabit to the desktop for data and some other system for traditional voice? Can this save money on allowing a company not to upgrade the voice infrastructure, while just upgrading the ethernet to the desktop? Does any of this makes sense?

GB to individual desktops is quite some time to go; even those networking companies, most of the depts still going with 10 m hubs or switches

5) I am trying to understand how atm ip networks in the wan and gigabit ethernet to the desktop can create opportunities for fore? Will it be the backbone of corporate networks where fore will be making most of its money?
Higher layer protocols can use ATM as a network transport and IP is just one of them although it is becoming ubiquitous. As long as companies focus on the above business facts likely to make money

6) If all of this is true does ericy strong wan atm product fit well with fore' lan oriented product
Integrated LAN-WAN access or switch can feed into any ATM WAN switch circuit(s); 4000 from fore also can be a wan switch

7) Also, tlab's new atm product is it wan or lan oriented? How does it rate compared to fore or asnd?
tlab up till now is mainly in digital cross connects for service providers and so it's wan space; new atm product likely will integrate cross connect with some form of ATM edge access switch capability more like cisco mgx 8800

8) Everyone is talking about asnd for lu, but how much do asnd and fore compete? Isn't asnd more wan oriented in atm and couldn't both asnd and fore fit well into the lucent fold?

4000 competes with 500 and 550; not likley for both as lu already has pretty good footholds in access concentrator as well as ATM switch; if it happens more for mkt opportunity and fore is a better fit as lu can gain quick mkt penetration into many large enterprise customers and broadens their mkt presence quickly in the data arena
