Putting it briefly, all UPS's I am familiar with have surge protection. Some have more sophisticated power conditioning. The best ones keep the voltage constant regardless of the incoming voltage or lack thereof. There are several techniques used, but they all work.

The best actually provide rejiggered (note technical terminology) battery power all the time and use AC power to recharge the batteries at the same time. This totally isolates your computer from any framimawhatsits your local utilty may provide along with the electricity.

I hope this is clear. As others have said, APC is one of the best brands.

Glad you concur, Valueman. I agree w/your advice on spending a little more for the better model. An excellent use of coin if one values their HW and SW.
