<Cisco will field trial the TGX optical core switch later this year !!!and will ship the product beginning in 1999. !!! >

It seems like CSCO makes announcements of some vaporware just to stall the progress and installments by Carriers. However this one backfired badly. Most major US carries already tested the ASND switches and have either announced ( GTE,QWST,LCI,FRONTIER, WCOM,) or will make more announcements soon. They might have even copied the ASND strategy and hence fell behind by one year.

It is self explanatory who is leading the CARRIER market. I like the comments from H&Q Joe Noel, "one day( may be by year 2000), ASND may be bigger than CSCO", ( if their carrier strategy is correct.)

Is the 550 the only switch shipping today with oc48? cisco will have it in 1999. How about NN or NT? Also, is it a concatinated oc48 (oc48c) or just 4 oc12's muxed together? I looked at the info on the web page but they did not specify. If it's just 4 oc12's muxed into a oc48 then that's not as significant a competitive advantage...
