India's move against EC comes as no surprise

The Government's decision to take the European Commission (EC) to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) over the controversial European Union
(E.U.) anti-dumping duties on imports of unbleached cotton from India, comes as no surprise to anybody. The representatives of India's 'Cotton Textile Export Promotion Council' arrived in Brussels on Tuesday for a second round of hearings on ways and means of imposing anti-dumping duties by the EC - the executive arm of the E.U. India had filed a request "'for consultations'' last week with the WTO, over
the controversial issue. India wants to explore the issue of bed linen imports which is also subjected to anti-dumping tariff rates. The EC had imposed provisional six-month anti-dumping duties on unbleached cotton from India and five other countries-- China, Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan and turkey in April.
