08-08-98 LG Suspends Chip Output for 7 Days

LG Semicon said yesterday it will stop its production lines for seven days starting Monday by granting its workers a
summer vacation.

''The halt of assembly lines is expected to bring about a 20 percent reduction in chip output,'' an LG spokesman said,
adding that the move will boost falling chip prices in the global market resulting from the supply glut.

Korea's two major semiconductor producers, Samsung and Hyundai, also halted their production lines twice in recent
months.

Faced with a global slump in the industry, Japan's electronics giants, NEC and Hitachi, also cut chip production in recent
weeks.

Industry analysts are saying that the supply glut in the world's chip market is showing gradual signs of abating because of
the reduction efforts of major players.

As of the end of last month, 64-megabit DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chips were being sold at $8.5 to
$9.2 per unit. The chips were sold at around $8 in June.

But it will take more time for chip prices to rebound, analysts said.
