Sadly, designing chips is actually almost a commodity profession these days. Congress allowing more visa's should keep the lid on the salary even more (my IC design job transfered to Singapore last yr.) I'm moving on to system level stuff actually. As with most true engineering (and design) the reward is mostly you get to do something interesting again that challenges your brain while making a reasonable living. The really big bucks are in management or in other professions. Consider that an MBA from one of the top 5 schools gets more in first yr salary than most engineers I know from the top 3 schools that also have 20 years of design experience and are still doing engineering rather than management.
