PR Newswire - August 06, 1998 09:16

ATLANTA, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA), announced today that the National Digital Television Center (NDTC), currently a subsidiary of TCI Ventures Group, LLC, has entered into an agreement with Scientific-Atlanta that allows for the purchase of substantial quantities of advanced digital set-top devices and supporting network equipment. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

This marks the first commitment by Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI) for itself and its affiliates for Scientific-Atlanta's advanced digital set-top devices and the network that supports them. Shipments are scheduled to begin later this year for an initial deployment in Salt Lake City, home of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, where TCI serves 190,000 subscribers. Other commitments are expected to follow.

"We are excited to have Scientific-Atlanta as a supplier in our roll-out of advanced digital set-top devices including high-speed Internet 'watch-and- surf' capabilities based on DOCSIS cable modem technology," said David P. Beddow, senior vice president of TCI Ventures Group.

"Scientific-Atlanta is committed to the industry OpenCable initiative and the evolution of our products," said Larry L. Enterline, Scientific-Atlanta's corporate senior vice president, Worldwide Sales and Service. "This agreement with TCI clearly reflects our commitment to expand our product offering to include next-generation, advanced digital set-tops as well as Explorer 2000s."
