The Blimps Are Coming!

Aug. 7, 1998

In action late last week, the Federal Communications Commission approved the use of "stratospheric platforms" - also known as blimps - as telecommunications stations.

According to the rulemakimg, blimp stations created by Sky Station International expected to launch in 2001 will be the dominant use of 1,000 MHz of spectrum (47.2-48.2 GHz). Satellites are also projected to be potential users of the spectrum.

he Sky Station services are expected to provide instant T1/E1 access to millions of users in designated service areas. Applications may include real-time data communications, video phone service, full motion video conferencing, high speed commercial data transfers, automatic meter readings, telemedicine and distance learning.
