NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D., Aug 6 (Reuters) - Gateway Inc. <GTW.N>, a major direct marketer of personal computers, said Thursday it has selected Lakewood, Colo., as the site for its new information technology (IT) development center.

Gateway plans to have 150 employees on staff by December, eventually growing to about 300. Hiring will begin immediately.

The company is expected to receive incentives from local, county and state levels totaling about $1,775,000, said Felice Plain, director of economic development for Lakewood. The package is based on Gateway fulfilling certain levels of hiring and capital investment, she said.

Gateway said it will now recruit software developers, systems analysts, operations analysts, data center and development managers and support staff.

The development center will occupy an existing building in early September.

Gateway has facilities in the United States, Ireland and Malaysia and employs more than 13,000 people worldwide including about 600 IT employees.

Last month, Gateway reported it shipped 736,000 PCs in the second quarter of 1998 and generated sales of $1.62 billion.
