JPR:In all fairness to our Muslim-folk in Kerala I heard nobody forcefully converted them, at least most were converted on their own accord due to the close interaction between Arab traders and the local folks, a very strong economic and trade link existed in the old days and few if not many Arabs settled along the cost of Malabar in ancient times and got absorbed in the society. I can not however say this with any veracity at least until I further read up on the subject in due course. As for women-folk and their status in society, I like to point out that Kerala always has been a matriarchal society as such women-folk are treated with great esteem and high regard in society and even now in many families they call the shots. There is no gender based termination of pregnancy as boys and girls have equal status. As for dowry in those parts, traditionally a share of the property or wealth of the parents is given to the girl at the time of marriage, however in some circles this tradition is abused,it is a question of the 'enlighted' parents vs the not so 'enlightened' ones. Also note the practice varies among different segments of society based on religion, caste, social stature and other BS...among the 'englighted' ones the matter of dowry is not an issue and is hardly mentioned.I think the practice among Muslims I guess is the reverse, ie boys parents give the girls the dowry,is it not so???? At least this is what my understanding is,I could be wrong though. PS:I hope you don't get the impression that everything in Kerala is hunky-dory, it is hardly so as we have our own social evils and societal problems of immense proportions.
