LSI did make a major purchase--Symbios. Moreover, the Symbios purchase was first contemplated in early '98, since LSI had completed their due diligence at the time of Adaptec's purchase. Given LSI's alacrity in purchasing Symbios when the Adaptec purchase fell through, it is reasonable to assume that LSI was waiting in the wings with cash in hand should the Adaptec purchase have failed to receive approval.
