She's Got Legs! Spoke to my boss at Tekserve today and it seems I was wrong about our allocation of 15 iMacs being pre-sold out -- it's *40* iMacs being pre-sold out! It's really kind of crazy because we don't yet have any peripherals SKU-ed besides the Imation SuperDrive. The Epson 850N seems a good, if pricey, ethernet printer choice. At this point we're temporarily out of towers (one 9600/200 left), but we have good stock of the 233 desktops that we're confident will move as people wait for iMacs. IMO, they're a better choice anyway for people who're upgrading existing systems. (That's my sales pitch anyway.) Regarding Cringley's iMac tech notes: Having to replace the "entire chassis" to swap a power supply didn't seem to jibe with the tech notes. On ram installations some dis-assembly is required. Overall, these things are pretty modular and Tekserve's goal is to make 80% of iMac warranty work - "while-you-wait". That speaks of good product design. One customer told me his friend had ordered an iMac for his kitchen! Spoke to another customer who had 25 networked Macs in his medical office and was seriously impressed at what he would get with a $1300 iMac. (He had recently spent $2,000 for some 6500/275 setups.) Considering that this guy (or other network candidates) really doesn't need floppy, CDROM, modem, or software, it's scary how many stripped down iMacs AAPL should be able to profitably sell, once they get ramped up! PS> via Macintouch: >Mac production and sales apparently are proceeding at full steam, based on a note from Jeff Schultz: "Just to give you an idea of the demand for the iMac... I just ordered mine over the phone from Club Mac. The salesperson had 269 units allocated to him from Apple, and I was order number 291. He said that people were ordering in blocks of 20-30 at a time."<
