Don, you are right on target here. I believe that this is one of Compaq's missteps that makes Michael Dell smile the most. Forging alliances are keys to success in technology sales. Compaq effectively withdrew from some important alliances by buying DEC. Dell was in a perfect position to capitalize on that error. Dell will not make the same mistake.

It would also be an error for Dell to consider the purchase of a component manufacturer, because much of Dell's success is attributable to avoidance of unnecessary expenditures on R&D.

Finally, Dell's cash flow is so robust that it would make no sense to purchase a smaller competitor, when it can build facilities at a much lower price.

I would be very surprised to be wrong in this analysis.
