In favor of a 'good' shock is that China is experiencing less inflation than its neighbors, which gives it a 'devaluation' in real terms. And the prospective WTO membership as well as the need to purchase equipment, technology abroad.

But, I also am not very optimistic. Good post and review, yours, Franco.
