Marc, Re: "Saturday I thought I might have heard him say he has the Total MARkET INDEX for his entire US allocation now."

I thought I heard him say that the Total Market Index is the only US INDEX fund he owns.

Regards, Gary

Hi Mark - I heard the same thing regarding the Total Market Index (VTSMX). I have provided a link of the market performance for the fund provided by Schwab "Mutual Fund Report Card" service.
You will need the Adobe Acrobat reader to view the file. Here is the link to download the reader (http://www.schwabnet.com/research/acrobat.html)

Here is the prospectus provided by Vanguard (http://www.vanguard.com/pub/Pdf/index.pdf).

Read page 16 for a summary of the fund and ESPECIALLY PAGE 20 for a more detailed description.

The target index tracks 7,400 stocks using a statistical sampling program. The fund holds a total of 2,800 stock which tries to mirror this index of 7,400 stocks.

From my review, this fund represents a more broad selection of the larger and midcap U.S. companies with a very low expense ratio of only 0.20%! Seems like a good pick to me.

I use Schwab as my major brokerage account and they charge a one time fee of 0.7% of the principle up to $15K and 0.2% up to $100K amount invested to buy this fund. Therefore, if you are going to invest any sizable amount, it may be better to go directly to the fund.
